The Three O'Clock Gap, and What Soluble Fibre Does About It

A reasonable lunch stops registering about three hours later. That gap costs more plans than any single meal, and it is the most mechanically addressable problem in the whole category.

Ask people where their eating plan goes wrong and most will name a meal. Dinner, usually, or a weekend. They are almost always wrong. The damage happens in a quiet stretch between about two and five in the afternoon, standing near a cupboard, not especially hungry, eating something nobody would describe as a meal.

What makes that window so difficult is that it is not hunger in the ordinary sense. It is the absence of the feeling that you have already eaten — which is a different signal, and one that fades faster than most people expect.

Why lunch stops counting

Fullness is not one mechanism. Part of it is stretch: the physical volume of food in the stomach. Part of it is chemical, from what has been absorbed. The stretch component fades as the stomach empties, and for a typical low-volume, high-calorie lunch it can fade surprisingly quickly, leaving you with calories on board and no sense of having eaten them.

Where glucomannan comes in

Konjac glucomannan is a soluble fibre with an unusual property: it absorbs many times its own weight in water and forms a soft gel. Taken with a full glass of water before a meal, it adds volume that stays put for longer than the meal itself would, and it has one of the more substantial research bases of any satiety fibre — the work indexed on PubMed is a reasonable place to start.

It is a genuinely mechanical intervention, which is refreshing in a field full of vaguer claims. It is also the reason for the one rule this formula actually insists on.

The rule nobody reads

A fibre that works by holding water does precisely nothing without water. Taken with a mouthful, glucomannan is an expensive nothing — and this is, by a distance, the most common explanation when somebody writes in to say the capsules did not do anything for them.

  • A full glass with the capsules. Not a sip to get them down.
  • Roughly eight glasses across the day. More if you train or the weather is against you.
  • Twenty to thirty minutes before the meal. Gel that forms after you have eaten has missed its moment.

What it will not do

Soluble fibre makes a sensible portion feel sufficient. It does not override a decision to eat something anyway, it does not work on a meal you have already finished, and it is not an appetite suppressant in the pharmacological sense. Anyone describing it in those terms is overselling a fairly modest, fairly well-understood mechanism.

It is one of ten actives in this formula and it works alongside garcinia on the same problem — the full list is on the inside the bottle page, and the tabbed breakdown sits on the homepage.
